  • A Heartbreaking Goodbye: Rest Easy Sweet Girl

A Heartbreaking Goodbye: Rest Easy Sweet Girl

This is the hardest post we’ve ever had to write. Our beloved Sweets is no longer with us and its a heartbreaking goodbye.

It happened so fast—too fast. On Tuesday, she was playing with her daughter, Dolly, full of life and joy, just as she always was. Less than a week later, we faced the unbearable reality that we had no choice but to let her go. Her liver failed, and there was nothing we could do to save her. No treatments, no second chances—just an awful, cruel fate that took her from us far too soon.

We had Sweets for about a year and seven months, but in that short time, she became everything to us. She was the best dog—loyal, loving, and always by our side. She had the sweetest, most caring personality, as if she knew exactly how to comfort us when we needed it most. The way she would look into our eyes with understanding and empathy. She was more than just a pet; she was family.

Now, our house feels unbearably quiet. The absence of her presence is deafening. Dolly, her daughter, searches for her everywhere—wandering the house, sniffing her favorite spots, waiting for her to come back. It shatters our hearts all over again. We wish we could explain it to her. We wish we could change it.

I will miss so many things about Sweets, but most of all, I will miss her playtime “clamps.” The way she would snap her mouth shut with a loud noise, not to hurt but to play—to connect. It was her way of saying, “You’re mine, and I love you.” That simple, silly little game now feels like the most precious thing in the world. Now who will give us bed time face licks? Every night as we settled into bed, Sweets would clean our faces for the day……

Sweets came into our lives when we needed her, and she left far too soon. But the love she gave us will never fade. My wife and I will always remember the way she would tilt her head when she was curious, the way she snuggled up to us when we needed comfort, and the way she made our house feel like home.

We miss you, Sweets. We always will.

    Rest easy, sweet girl.

  • Really Scared Visitors: The Mystery of the Kennel Bark-a-thon

Really Scared Visitors: The Mystery of the Kennel Bark-a-thon

If you’ve ever visited our home, you’ve already met our dynamic duo: Sweets and Dolly, our two German Shepherds. They’re fluffy, lovable, and (mostly) well-behaved… well, depending on their mood and where they happen to be when you walk through the door. Sometimes we end up with really scared visitors.

You see, our girls have a quirky welcome routine. If they’re chilling out in their kennels when guests arrive, they turn into the German Shepherd version of an over-the-top alarm system. Sirens, barks, and a whole lot of ruckus. It’s like they think they’re defending the White House. (Spoiler alert: They’re not.)

But here’s the twist! If they’re NOT in their kennels? Total opposite. No barking. No chaos. Just wagging tails, goofy grins, and the kind of over-the-top hospitality that makes you feel like you’ve walked into a surprise party planned by two dogs.

The Mystery of the Kennel Bark-a-thon

So why the barking when they’re in their kennels? It’s not like they’re uncomfortable. Those kennels are cozy enough to make a luxury hotel jealous. We’re talking plush bedding and plenty of space for doggy yoga stretches.

We’ve narrowed it down to two possible reasons:

    1. “Hey! We’re in here! Pay attention to us!”
Sweets and Dolly have a serious case of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). When they hear voices but can’t join the fun, they sound the alarm like they’re auditioning for a role in a canine crime drama.
    2. Guard Dog Mode Activated:
When confined, they seem to think it’s their duty to protect the house from invisible threats… like the sweet neighbor bringing cookies or the mailman (public enemy number one in their eyes).

    Free-Range Shepherds = Happy Greeters

Now, let them loose before visitors arrive? Different story.

Once free, Sweets and Dolly transform from barking sentinels to the welcoming committee you never knew you needed. Tails wagging so hard it’s like they might take flight, they wiggle and squirm with joy. Dolly especially is all about full-body greetings. If you’re not careful, she might try to climb into your lap (all 75 pounds of her).

Meanwhile, Sweets plays the cool, friendly host. She’ll give you the polite nose-boop, then plop down nearby like she’s saying, “Welcome, human. You’re safe now.”

    Managing the Bark Fest

So, what’s the solution when we have guests?

    We’ve discovered a few tricks:

    • The Pre-Visit Release: Letting them out of their kennels 5 minutes before guests arrive works like a charm. No barking. Just pure, tail-wagging happiness.
    • Kennel Karaoke: If they have to stay kenneled, we distract them with puzzle toys or treats. Turns out, a peanut butter-stuffed Kong works wonders for keeping them too busy to bark.
    • Visitor Orientation: We brief guests ahead of time. “If they’re barking, don’t worry. It’s just their way of saying ‘HI, WE SEE YOU!’”

    Why We Love Their Quirks

Sure, the barking can be a bit much, but we wouldn’t trade our girls’ personalities for anything. Whether they’re the Bark Brigade or the Hug Patrol, Sweets and Dolly remind us every day how much joy dogs bring into our lives.

So, next time you visit, expect one of two things: an enthusiastic bark chorus… or two fluffy, over-excited greeters who just want to be your best friends. Either way, you’re in for a memorable welcome!

  • When A California King Really Isn’t Big Enough

When A California King Really Isn’t Big Enough

My wife and I used to think we had life all figured out. We’d perfected the art of sleep with our trusty queen-size bed. It was spacious enough for us to stretch out, roll over, and sleep like royalty. Everything was great—until we brought two German Shepherds into our lives.

    That’s when everything changed.

The Queen Bed: Once Perfect, Now a Canine Cramp Fest

At first, we thought we could make it work. Sweets and Dolly, our furry “children,” seemed happy to snooze at the foot of the bed. Sure, we noticed their paws creeping closer to our space over time, but we chalked it up to their love for us.

Then one night, I woke up dangling off the edge of the bed, gripping the blanket like it was a lifeline. My wife was curled into a human question mark on the other side, and in the middle were our two dogs, sprawled out like they owned the place.

We were outnumbered. The queen bed had officially become a battlefield.

    The California King Dream

Desperate for a solution, we decided to upgrade to a California King. This would be the bed to save us—a luxurious fortress of sleep that could handle two humans and two dogs.

The day the bed arrived felt like Christmas morning. It was massive, beautiful, and full of promise. We imagined ourselves sleeping like kings and queens, finally free from nightly wrestling matches for space.

That first night, we climbed into our new bed with high hopes. The dogs hopped up too, settling into their usual spots. This is it, we thought. We’ve won.

Spoiler alert: We had not. The California King really isn’t big.

    Bigger Bed, Bigger Problems

Here’s the thing about German Shepherds: they adapt. Not to you, but to more space.

Instead of staying politely at the foot of the bed, Sweets and Dolly decided the middle of the bed was the new prime real estate. And why sleep straight when you can sleep sideways? By midnight, they were stretched out like furry logs, forcing my wife and me to cling to the edges like we were auditioning for Survivor: Bedroom Edition.

It turns out that no matter how big your bed is, two German Shepherds will find a way to shrink it.

    Lessons from the Edge

Now, every night is a new adventure. Sometimes we wake up with a paw in the face. Sometimes it’s a tail wagging in our dreams. And sometimes, we just give up and sleep like starfish on whatever corner of the mattress is available.

But honestly? We wouldn’t have it any other way.

Sweets and Dolly might take up all the space, but they also fill our home with love, laughter, and an endless supply of fur. They’ve taught us that the size of your bed doesn’t matter—because when you share it with two dogs, it’ll never be big enough anyway.

And maybe, just maybe, that’s the best part.
